Parent Education Program

Program Goals

The first step in Family Court Services, is attending the mandatory Parent Education (PE) program. The goals of PE include:

  1. Helping parents understand the impact of parental conflict on their children and ways to help children adapt to having parents living separately.
  2. Providing information about the FCS mediation and study process and the Dane County Family Court process.

If litigants have previously attended Parent Education within the past 4 years, the requirement may be waived by FCS, the judge, or the commissioner. Parent Education may be completed at another agency if approved in advance by the Family Court Services Director. Parent Education must be completed within 45 days of the Court’s referral.

Same day Mediation is offered on PE days to a limited number of individuals. The sessions must be arranged in advance by both parents. These sessions are offered on a “first come, first serve” basis, and at the discretion of the FCS Office. If parents do not have their mediation appointment the same afternoon as Parent Education, a counselor will be assigned to work with you a t a later date. You will receive an appointment letter from the assigned counselor concerning your initial mediation meeting. If either parent has a preference for scheduling appointments, please let us know on the “Information Form” and we will try to accommodate.
